Wedding photographer at
Château de Challain
Château de Challain, in the Anjou, is a neo-gothic château of the 1850s so complete it is called the little Chambord. Four towers for the seasons, twelve turrets, fifty-two fireplaces. It runs as a private all-inclusive house for British and international couples, and it is one of the great Loire Valley venues we would love to photograph.
From our own weddings. We have not yet photographed here, and we would love to.
The château
Madame de La Rochefoucauld built Challain between 1847 and 1854, after her husband's death, and the architect René Hodé gave her a neo-gothic jewel: four towers for the four seasons, twelve turrets, fifty-two fireplaces, twenty-six spiral staircases. A listed monument, in a wooded park around the village of Challain.
It runs today as a privately owned, all-inclusive wedding house, a hundred and fifteen kilometres from home, on the western edge of the Loire Valley. We quote the travel there transparently.
Why Challain suits the way we work
Challain was built out of grief and grandeur, and it photographs like it: hand-painted ceilings, carved panelling, twenty-six spiral staircases, a facade that belongs in a fairytale. Our task in a house like this is restraint, letting the architecture stay in the background where it belongs and keeping the couple in the light.
It hosts up to a hundred and fifty guests over several days, on full exclusivity. The couples who choose it want a château wedding at its most cinematic. We give it the documentary honesty that keeps all that splendour from tipping into a stage set.
Where your day photographs
The neo-gothic façade
Four towers, twelve turrets, the little Chambord silhouette. It carries a wide portrait and an arrival like almost nowhere else.
The painted salons
Carved woodwork, hand-painted ceilings, gothic panelling. We light for the faces and let the detail fall away soft behind.
The spiral staircases
Twenty-six of them, stone spirals that make a natural frame for a dress or a quiet moment between two people.
The wooded park
The mature grounds around the village, long light in the late afternoon, room for the couple to disappear for fifteen minutes.
The chapel
On site, for the ceremony or a blessing, intimate under stone.
How we would photograph your day
We came to weddings from photojournalism. We observe, we anticipate, we capture what happens without interrupting it. No posing, no staging the facade, no asking anyone to do it again.
We always work as two. While one of us is at the ceremony, the other is watching the faces. That second pair of eyes is the difference between a record of the venue and a record of your day.
