This was all about love. The kind of love you feel and almost touch. Real. Dense. Present.

Bruckenthal gave us the setting and then got out of the way. A Baroque palace above Avrig, south of Sibiu, old and unbothered, all stone stairs and heavy trees and afternoon light that arrives late and leaves slowly. We did not spend the day on the architecture. Architecture does not surprise you. People do.

The getting ready hours were loud in the best way, the kind of loud that is really just a family too happy to keep their voices down. Doors opening. Someone doubled over laughing. A child attached to somebody’s leg. We were in all of it and part of none of it, which is where we work best. Nobody photographs their own family well because the family behaves for them. Behave for no one and you get the truth, and the truth is what we are there to keep.

We asked for one thing before the wedding and only one. Fifteen minutes at some point for the two of them, away from everyone. After that, no shot list, no schedule, no standing anyone in good light. They said yes and then they forgot we existed, which was the plan. A couple that is genuinely enjoying their own wedding gives you images a directed couple never can, because joy that is real does not know it is being looked at.

The ceremony was where the day stopped moving and started meaning something. It is a strange thing to stand inside, all that feeling in one room, people holding on to each other because the moment asks them to. Tavi took his grandmother’s face in his hands. She looked up at him. Whatever passed between them in that second passed once and never again, and it will not repeat itself at another wedding or in another life. This is the part of the work that has nothing to do with cameras. You cannot ask for a look like that.

Then the doors, the light, the noise coming back, and Alexandra went toward Tavi and Tavi went toward her and the boy went too, and the frame closed around all three for exactly one moment. Cristina saw it half a second before it existed and it was gone half a second after. You look at it and you are not watching a wedding. You are watching a whole life move in one direction at once.

The evening broke open on the dance floor. Something they had rehearsed together, then something no one rehearsed at all, the room folding into it until there was no line left between the couple and everyone who loved them.

Some people you have to coax open. Tavi and Alexandra were wide open from the first minute, and all we did was keep up.
